Here is a funnel from a store that spends on ads. 5,000 paid clicks at $1.80 each. 1,900 product views. 420 carts. 180 purchases. Most analytics tools will show you the drop-off percentages and stop, as if the leak were measured in people.
Run the money through it instead. Nine thousand dollars of spend, divided at each stage, prices every step of the journey. The last number gets called CPA and watched daily. The intermediate prices get calculated by nobody, and they are where the diagnosis lives.

The click-to-view step swallowed $5,580 of the $9,000 in this example. The checkout everyone wants to redesign lost $432. Sixty-two cents of every ad dollar bought a click that never saw a product, which reframes the whole optimization queue. The landing page is the emergency, and the checkout, for now, is a rounding error.
Tools resist this arithmetic more than you would expect. GA4 caps funnel explorations at ten steps and keeps ad cost in separate reports from funnel paths. Its documentation also notes that user-scoped breakdowns in a funnel exploration take the first value recorded for that user, so a shopper who clicked a Meta ad on a phone and finished on a laptop counts as mobile at every step. The cost data and the behavior data sit one join apart. The join never ships.
A spreadsheet closes the gap this afternoon. Export spend by day and source. Export funnel counts the same way. Divide. The per-source version is where it gets interesting, because a $50 blended CPA routinely decomposes into one channel converting at $28 and another at $95, and the average hides both.
The habit worth building is pricing the steps, whatever tool does the dividing. A funnel percentage tells you where people leave. The same funnel with dollars on it tells you what each leak costs, and the two rankings disagree more often than they agree.
